History
Virudhunagar was earlier known as Virudhu Patti which was the district
headquarters of Ramanadapuram. Earlier it was known as Virdhukkalvetti
during the British period. Virdhukkal means banners. According to the
legends, a famous warrior had collected too many flags which were in token
of the places he had conquered. This warrior challenged a resident of
Virudhunagar and in turn got defeated.
From then this place came to be known as Virudhu Patti and was later
rechristened as Virudhunagar. This place was important during the British
period as things were exported from here to other countries. This place is
also famous as the birthplace of the Chief Minister of Chennai, Sree Kamraj.

* Andal Vadapadrasayi koil:
This is one of the famous temples of Virudhunagar. A towering gopurams this
is 192 feet high and is the symbol of Tamil Nadu State Government. It houses

An excellent picnic spot, this island lies adjoining the port.
* Church of Our Lady of Snow:
Earlier known as St. Paul's Church, this church is dedicated to the Mother
of Jesus and was consecrated by the Bishop of Cochin.
* Shenbagathope Grizzled Squirrel Sanctuary:
Nestled amidst the greenery of the Western Ghats, Shenbagathope Grizzled
Squirrel Sanctuary is another beautiful example of Tamil Nadu Wildlife. This
wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu is the house of unique species of flora and
fauna. Surrounded by Periyar Forests and Madhumalai Forests, the Sanctuary
is the home to a number of animals. The animals like leopard, spotted deer,
barking deer, Nilgiri Thar, Sambar, wild boar, tiger, porcupine, Nilgiri
langur, lion-tailed macaque, common langur, slender loris, bonnet macaque,
sloth bear and flying squirrel.
