The Avantika of yore has become today's Ujjain. Legend has it that king Shiva defeated the demon chief Tripuri and chrisf-ened the city anew. Vindusar, the father of emperor Ashok had his capital at ancient Avantika. Chandragupta II (380-414 AD) too shifted his capital from Pataliputra to Avantika. The city of Ujjain is located in the Malav plateau, at a height of 1614 ft, by the side of the Shipra river, the tributary of Chambal. Ujjain is a veritable paradise on earth and holds various attractions for tourists. Mahendra, the son of Emperor Ashok (or his brother, according to Sri Lankans), was born in Ujjain. It was from Ujjain that Mahendra, accompanied by his sister San-ghamitra, went to conquer Lanka with the message of Buddhism. Prior to his mission, there were more than 400 Buddhist vihars or monasteries in Ujjain, which have all been destroyed today. Kalidas, the great poet, was said to be the court poet of Vikramaditya, the ruler of Ujjain and in his immortal work, the Meghdutam, describes the" city vividly. Later, the king of Mandu defeated the Par-mar king Shiladitya and occupied Ujjain. In 1235 the city fell prey to the ravages of Iltut-mis. Bajbahadur tried to repair the damages and when the city passed into Akbar's hands from Bajbahadur, he built a wall around Ujjain, parts of which can be seen even today. In what has gone down into history as an amazing move, Aurangzeb offered money to build a Hindu temple. Maharaj Jaisingh (Jaipur), when he became the governor of Malwa, built several temples in Ujjain as well as the Jantar Mantar or observatory. After Jaisingh, the Marathas annexed Ujjain. In 1750, when the city passed into the hands of the Scindia kings, they moved the capital to Gwalior in 1810, and from that day the star of Ujjain started warning.

However, it is still regarded as a holy shrine, one of the Saptapuris and 52 Satipeeths, the place where Sati's elbow is supposed to have fallen. The ghat of the Shipra river is said to be one of the 4 places on earth where there was Kumbhayoga.
