Sravasti
Sravasti, one of the most renowned of the eight Buddhist pilgrimages, can be visited from Gorakhpur itself. One can directly get to Sravasti from Balarampur on the Gorakhpur-Gonda branch line after a 18 km bus journey. The nearest railway station is at Gainjahwa and this Buddhist pilgrimage can also be visited from Lucknow which is the nearest airport via Gonda. It is 197 km from Lucknow, 253 km from Gorakhpur and 147 km from Ayodhya. Sravasti was the Capital of the historically famous ancient Koshal kingdom. It is said that Lord Buddha had spent 25 monsoons here in Sravasti and it was here that he had made the atheist Koshal king Prosenjit, believe in god after showing him the miracle of enlightenment on lotus of 1000 petals. It was from here that he started on his missionary work to the different parts of the world. But the past has gradually been obliterated and the two Ashokan pillars on the eastern borders of this Bihar have also become extinct. There are also two Buddhist temples built by the Chinese and Burmese. Sravasti is not only famous as a Buddhist pilgrimage but also an important Jain religious centre as the Jain Tirthankara Mahavira had visited this place many times. The PWD IH, the Chinese and Burmese Temple Rest Houses and various Dharamshalas are available. And hotels are available at Balarampur.
