Sambalpur
Sambalpur town is district headquarters of Sambalpur district in northwest Orissa. It was named after Samlai or Shyamleswari Devi founded by king Balaram Dev. Mahanadi, impregnated with gems,, flows beneath it. God Shiva exists in Buddharaja temple on not-too-high Buddharaja hill looking like a crown on city's top. A beautiful panoramic view of the town is available from hill-top. There are also Bara Jagannath, Brahmapura, Gopalji in the town. Sambalpur is famous as trade centre. Equally famous are Sambalpur's hand-woven clothes, tie & dye prints, wooden toys. These can be collected as mementos of west Orissa tour. Still Sambalpur is more famous in tourist map as a junction stn connecting Hirakud, Badrama Abhayaranya, Huma & Nrisinghanath. You can see it in 5 days Rourkela included. Sambalpur is not modern town. We find its reference in Ptolemy's writings (2nd century) named -Sambalaka on the bank of Manada (Mahanadi).
