40 km from Chidambaram the Chola kings' port town Puhar in the basin of the Kaveri has now become Poompuhar, but the past is now been swallowed by the sea. Poompuhar is now known only for its beach, Art Gallery, TTDC's Craft Emporiam and different temples. There are no hotels to stay. It is wise for the interested ones to visit the place by bus from Chidambaram or Tanjore or Pichhavaram. But there cottage-patterned rooms are available for staying at the Tourist Complex of Tamilnadu Tourism. Buses ply regularly from here to Chidambar­am. Or you can go to Mayuram by train and take bus from there to Poompuhar.
