Nagarjuna Sagar
Nagarjuna Sagar is a small town in Hyderabad layered in antiquity and
was known as Vijayapuri or the City of Victory in ancient times. The town is
a prominent Buddhist site and derives its name from the Buddhist saint,
Acharya Nagarjuna. The city was ruled by the Satavahanas, before it became
the capital of Ikshvaku rulers in 3rd century BC. Situated between the
cities of Guntur and Hyderabad, Nagarjuna Sagar is famous for its massive
irrigation project on River Krishna which was completed in 1969. One of the
earliest hydro-electric projects in India; Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is 124 m high
and a kilometre long, making it the tallest masonry dam in the world. At
present, the Nagarjuna Sagar area has three settlements, Vijayapuri or V .P
South, Pylon and Hill Colony.
Sightseeing Highlights:
The colossal Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is one of the major sight-seeing spots in
the town. Several tours are available to see the turbines in action. Next in
importance is the famous Nagarjuna Konda, a pretty island raised on an
artificial lake, which was created when the dam was constructed. The island
has a Buddhist Museum which preserves Buddhist relics dating back to 3rd
century BC, excavated at the time of dam construction. The state tourism
runs a boat service to this island from Vijayapuri South. Ethipotala
Waterfall, 8 Km from the town is a lovely spot for picnics. A small stream
drops from a height of 21 m to form a lagoon below, which is a famous
crocodile breeding centre. Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary on the banks of
River Krishna is home to tigers, birds and reptiles.
Other Activities:
A 20-minute boat ride to Nagarjuna Konda is quite an experience in itself.
Day trips to the dam are organised by the tourism department. Stretching
across the length of river Krishna, the magnanimity of the dam leaves you
spellbound. The 110 Km motorboat ride from Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam is
another noteworthy experience.
