Maheswar: After visiting Omkareswar you can take a bus to 61 km away Maheswar via Barwa. There are buses to Maheswar from Indore, where the nearest rail station is, 91 km away, Barwa 39 km and Khandwa 110 km away. The Mahishmati of the Ramayana and Mahabharata is today's Maheswar. Before Indore, the capital was at Maheswar. In the 18th century, queen Ahalyabai restored the past glory of the 7th century by building countless temples by the side of the Narmada. There are ghats after ghat in Narmada and all the temples there-the Kaleswar, Ra-jarajaeswar, Bithaleswar, Ahileswar and other temples, all of them are spectacular. In the fort the sights, are the statue of Queen Ahalyabai sitting on the Rajgaddi or throne, the museum with the memorial of the Holkar family, the Dussera Tirtha Mandap or pavilion, Sati dome and chhatris or cenotaph of Ahalyabai who died in 1795. At the outskirts of the city, the Narmada further divides itself into various distributaries. As a souvenir of your Maheswar sojourn, you can buy Mahes-. wari saris.
