Keonjhar : Keonjhar is 112 km away from Jajpur-Keonjhar Road rly stn. Buses are available. Buses connect not only from 225 km distant Bhubaneswar, but also from other parts of the state. Even ORT's bus for Barbil come from Babughat, Calcutta at 5-30 in 9 hr via 62 km distant Joshipur, it returns at 17-00; fare Rs 58. Bus is convenient for a through journey from Calcutta. To Simlipal tourists it would be wiser to see Khiching first and then take a bus to Keonjhar.

Keonjhar is a calm and quiet little hill-town surrounded by hills and forest. Songs of known and unknown birds have made it a dreamland, altitude being 1575 ft. Santhal, Oraon, Munda tribals live. You should see 3 km away Jagannath Temple by rickshaw or on foot. There are other gods in the temple terrace. The doors are closed from 12-00 to 17-30 hr. You can also take a jeep or rickshaw for Rs 30 and see small water falls & big ones. The town's drinking water-supply is made from this highly beautiful Ghaghra or waterfalls. Water comes down from a spring. 30 km away Gonasika hills. Baitarani river draws its water from the falls, flows down 400 km beside Jajpur and falls into the sea. The source resembles a cow's nose. There is a temple of god Shiva here. The water of Baitarani is very sacred. Others opine that Baitarani rises in Malaygiri hill. You can catch a Pal Lahara/ Sambalpur-bound bus from Keonjhar, get down after covering 21 km and reach Gonasika walking 9 km on foot. Jeeps go right up to the hill. Gandhamadan mountain stands 10 km. away from Keonjhar. Pavan's son Hanuman of Ramayana carried the mountain on his head to Lanka. Katarbeda lies 23 km along the road to Jajpur. Another 7 km to the right direction will bring you to Sitabinji. Here are frescoes on hill-side looking like a half-open umbrella. Hill-stream Sita flows beneath it. Nature in Keonjhar is charming. You can take a Anandapur-bound bus from Keonjhar to go along Keonjhar-Jajpur-Anandapur road to 45 km distant. Ma Tarini Temple. The goddess has considerable divine power.
