Kanpur
Situated on the banks of the River Ganges, Kanpur is the largest city in Uttar Pradesh and one of its main industrial hubs. The city is famous for its leather exports and production of cotton fabrics. It also has a strong association with the Indian independence movement. The city was quite insignificant until 1765 when the entire province was transferred to the British under a treaty signed by the Nawab of Awadh. With the rapid influx of colonial traders, the erstwhile British garrison town of Cawnpore gained power in terms of politics and business. Kanpur also witnessed the upsurge of the First War of Independence in 1857 led by Nana Sahib of Bithur, followed by the unfortunate Massacre of Kanpur or Bibighar Massacre .
