Joshimath
Joshimath: Joshimath is situated amidst the beautiful surroundings of nature encircled by mountains on three sides. In the 8th century the Guru Adi Sankaracharya had built his ashram Joytirmath in this place and hence the name Jovtirmath. It is 257 km from Hrishikesh, 42 km from Badri and is at a height of 6260 ft. The river Alkananda with melodious soothing sound of its ripples accompanies tourist's throughout this stretch. Joshimath is inhabited by the Bhutiyas-an Indo-Mangolian race who lead a nomadic life. The yak plays an important role in their life because its milk-butter and meat is their means of livelihood. Buses going to Badri must cross Joshimath within 6-40-16-00 hr or else one has to spend the night here.
Just below the bus stand is the temple dedicated to Lord Nrishingha, the 4th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. During the winter months, Lord Shiva of the Badri temple is worshipped from here. In this temple there are idols of Navadurga and of Lord Ganesh with eight hands. Above the bus stand is the Sankaracharyas cave where there are a statues of Sankaracharya and his disciple Totka Nandji and also the crystal Shiva Lingam brought from Kailash. The 2400 years old Kalpabriksha should in no way be missed. Not only is Joshimath the gateway to the 4266 m high Kuwari Pass, but it has a path leading to Tibet also. It offers an excellent view of the 7818 m Nandadevi peak.
