Jaunpur: Though Jaunpur is not very significant from the tourism point of view, tour of this ancient town can be made in 2 hr from Varanasi by train or by bus. It is 58 km away from Varanasi, 115 km from Allahabad, 144 km from Ayodhya and 240 km from Lucknow. The railways connect Jaunpur to all these cities. Howrah- Dehra Doon Doon Exp ply via Varanasi. This ancient capital town was established in the year 1360 AD by Firoz Shah Tughlak. On the ruins of many Hindu, Buddhist, Jain temples spread over an area of- 3 km on the banks of the river Gomati, have developed many mosques between 1394-1478. There is the evidence of a fusion of Hindu and Muslim art in these buildings. The other interesting places are the Atala Masjid built in the year 1408, 3 km away from the railway station which was built after the demolition of the Atala temple; 500 m south the Jaunpur fort made by Feroz Shah in the year 1360; the Akbar Bridge built in the years between 1564-68 and 1 km away from the Bridge, the huge Jammi Masjid. Sikandar Lodhi was responsible for the destructions of the various temples but he didn't touched the mosques which remained intact. In the year 1530 Jaunpur was occupied by the Mughals.
