Gorakhpur: Gorakhpur is situated on the banks of the- river Rapti and Rohini at a height of 77 m from the sea level and on the National Highway no 28 and 29. In the past it was known as Ramgram and it was the capital of the Koliyas in the ancient days. It was named Gorakhpur much later after the Yogi Gorakhnath. The temperatures vary between 43.2-17.6° in summer and 31.5-6.2°C in winter. Though it is nothing worthwhile to attract tourists, yet it is an important junction for those Indian tourists intending to go to Nepal. Gorakhpur is the headquarter of the North-Eastern Railways. There are trains going to Delhi in 14hr (783 km), Lucknow (276 km)' in 5 hr, Bombay (1690 km) in 35 hr, Varanasi (231 km) in 5| hr. For that matter, the Howrah-Gorakhpur- Katgodam Exp goes to Katgodam on the newly constructed broad gauge line taking passengers to the Kumaoon Himalayas.

It is regularly connected by train, bus and aeroplanes from Lucknow, 276 km away. Every j an hour there is a bus and train from Varanasi, 231 km away. to Gorakhpur. The distances of Allahabad, Agra and Delhi are 139 km, 624 km and 783 km respectively; and also there are regular bus services to the Buddhist pilgrimages of Sravasti and Lumbini; Kashiya in lj hr from the station, to Varanasi in 6\ hr from the catchery stand and to various other places of north and eastern India.
