Bithoor
Bithoor: 27 km north-west
of Kanpur is another centre of Hindu pilgrimage ie, Bithoor, after having
given shape to this earth, the creator Brahma had done the Ashwamedh Yajna
on the banks of the river Ganga at Brahmavarta Ghat. The footprints of the
Yajna's horse is in evidence, even to this date. A fair is held every year
on Kartik Purnima day (according to Lunar Calendar). The Ashram of the great
sage Valmiki is just 1 km south of Bithoor. The great epic Ramayana was also
composed by Valmiki here. Sitadevi (consort of Sri Ram) had taken shelter in
this hermitage after leaving Ayodhya. The twins Lav and Kush (sons of Ram)
were also born here. Further down is the Ramdham where rooms without bed are
available. Very near to the railway station is the Haridham and 1 km away is
the Dhruva Tilla or Dham. On the left bank of the Ganges is Parihar, the
place where Sita had entered into the lap of mother-Earth and it is a 6 km
walk from the river bank. Though Bithoor is filled with relics of the past,
the war of 1857 has destroyed everything. There are memorial plaques of Nana
Saheb- this place is also named Tapoban. The last Peshwa Baji Rao had also
spent his exiled life in Bithoor. From Kanpur central station there are
trains run by diesel engines on the metre gauge line, to Brahmavarta at 5-30
am. The 5-50, 13-30 & 17-50 trains also leave Kanpur Anwarganj for Bithoor.
The trains return at 7-20, 15-00 and 19-45 hr. This journey is made in 1|
hr. There are buses from the Bam Chowrasta going through the National
Highway. From Kanpur bus stand autos are also available for Rewatpur and
Shankarpur. There are tempos to Bithoor from both these places. There is a
PWD IB where accommodation is available at the tempo stand of Bithoor.
Inspite of everything Bithoor is neglected from the tourism point of view.
One has walk around the 3 km stretch of the town, for sight-seeing. There
are no hotels here and it also does not have many shops around it. The best
idea would be to leave for Bithoor from Kanpur in the morning, make a day
long trip around this place, and return by tempo at 19-00 hr or avail of the
last train to Kanpur at 19-45 hr.
80 km on the west of Kanpur, and 50 km to the east of Sankashya is
Kanyakubja or Kanauj which revives the memories of the ancient days of glory
of when it was the capital of king Harsha's empire. The past was absolutely
wiped out by the attack of Mahmud Ghazni who plundered and looted the city.
Moreover, in 1540 it was in Kanauj that Humayun the Mughal emperor, was
forced to flee to Persia after being defeated in the hands of Sher Shah.
Though the fragrance of the past aura is tnissing. yet none can forget the
fragrance of the Alar for which Kanauj is famous.
