Bhimbetka
Bhimbetka: Immediately after Obedullaganj on the BhopaHtarsi-Panchmari road is Bhiyapur. Beyond the Bhiyapur level crossing, 3* km on the road to the east is Bhimbetka. It is 40 km south from Bhopal. There are buses and trains from Bhopal to Obedullaganj. If you don't want to walk, you can visit it by taxi from Bhopal at Rs 400. Bhimbetka is at a height of 2200 ft in the Vindhya plateau. In 1957 VS Wakankar discovered more than 700 caves here built in 3 tiers hewn from stone. The caves in the top row are large and decorated with exquisite paintings, drawn over a long period. Some of the paintings date back to the Stone Age, say archaeologists. All the caves bear colourful paintings-of various animals, hunting scenes, dance performances and scenes depicting their social life. The B-52, F-15, III C30, III C-29, C-6, C-12, C-13, C-17, C-9 and C-5A auditorium caves are extremely attractive. C-13's immense mythological Puranic cave painting of a hybrid animal drawn on bull rock, probably a tribal god, is unique. Bhimbetka is rich in scenic beauty too.
It is believed that the Pandava brothers came to this hill during their exile.. Bhimbetka is derived from Bhim baitka, meaning Bhim sat (here). Bhiyapur is also said to be a corruption of Bhimapur. The Pandavas and Betwa river flow in this region. There is no doubt that once tourist facilities are developed here, Bhimbetka, a land of marvels, will attract tourists in flocks. There is a lack of shops and markets here. The superenerge-tic can go to BetuI from Hosangabad on their way and proceed another 97 km further by bus to visit the Jain shrine of Muktagiri, consisting of 52 temples hewn out of the mountain. A fair is held here in the month of Kar-tik. -At Muktagiri there is a dharamshala for accommodation.
