Balasore
Balasore: Besides sea-beach at 3 km distance Balaramgarhi or Burhibalam river mingles with the sea. The surroundings are beautiful. Beside Burhibalam at Chashakhand revolutionary hero Jatindranath Mukhopadhyay fought with armed forces of the British. Deadly wounded, Jatindranath, was removed to a hospital at Balasore and his last rites were performed in the jail, where there is a memorial tablet in his name. The then hospital now houses Barbati Girls' School. This also has definite tourist attraction. You can see both with permission. Take a bus, auto or rickshaw to see Chashakhand. Go north along NH from Balasore, cross Fulari after 8 km, then turn to the left along Bagha Jatin Rd to reach Chashakhand, 2 km away. There is a school in the patriot's name and his statue has been raised 3 km north. Buses ply frequently along O T Rd. There is also at Remuna, 6 km from' Balasore, Kshirchora Gopinath Temple which tourists should see. Legend says that Gopinath, incarnation of Srikrishna lived here 800 years ago. However this temple is 150 years old. You can see it by a rickshaw or auto.
You can visit Panchalingeswar from Balasore by availing 8-00,13-00 16-00 hr buses in lA hr. After crossing l| km from bus std, you will find not-too-high Nilgiri hill surrounded by dense forest. This hill is infested with various animals. There is at the bottom of Nilgiri, ORTC's 4-roomed Panthashala Panchalingeswar, D 40 dormi bed 10,t abk ; Manager, P. O. Shyamsundarpur, via Raj Nilagiri/Balasore-756040, @ 65. You can see through- the windows of Panthashala groups of wild elephants strolling & trampling trees & plants, bears moving swingingly and if fortune favours, you may have the rare privilege of watching a tiger. The blue of the hill and the blue of the horizon is mixed up here at Panchalingeswar.
Path ascends upwardly near Panthashala. Crossing 200 plus stairs the path finally ends at the holy place of the deity, another l| km away. There is exactly no temple. A cascade descends with melodious note from the hill and water collects below. If you dip your hands in the water, you will touch Panchalingeswar (5 Shivaljngas). The deity possesses high divine power. Jarasandha is said to have worshipped this Panchalingeswar. On the bank resides a saint. Panthashala at Panchalingeswar is an ideal place where you can spend short holiday in sweet solitude. Meals are also available here. Opposite, there are shops where meals also are prepared against advance order. Energetic tourists can enter into the interior of the hill along with a guide by way of trekking. There is a Forest Bungalow at Kuldia, 15 km away. But you will have to arrange your own meal there, abk : Range Officer, Sujnagarh, via Nilgiri, Balasore. You can come here from Balasore by a morning bus, walk & see and go back to Balasore by an evening bus. Or you can reach Nilgiri, 14 km away from Balasore by any bus and from there cover 6 km either by a rickshaw @ Rs 25/30 or on foot. There are buses every hour at Nilgiri. Seasonal tourists may join conducted tours from Chandipur or take autos/ taxis @ 200/-250/- to cover Panchalingeswar/ Chashakhand/ Remuna in 7/8 hr; or one can take a rickshaw to see Chashakhand/ Remuna for Rs 30-35 in 5 hr.
There is again Chandbali, the ancient port town, 120km south of Balasore. You can proceed another 14 km to the southern direction, reach Shergarh and then go 27 km more along right side to see specimens of Buddhist artistry revealed in devastated Buddhist & Jain temples of past along with a few mother figures of 10th century. You can stay at OTDC's Panthasala Aradi, dormi bed Rs 10. Besides ORTC buses ply from Balasore to different parts of the state.
